It’s true, documentary cinematography is the hardest. How do you capture an unpredictable story and make it artistic?
From under a bus, an ICE raid, an eccentric political campaign, or among former members of ISIS, shooting non-fiction is the epitome of adventure. It can be agonizing, boring, terrifying, and occasionally fun! It’s hard enough to keep a moving subject in focus and record proper audio levels without even getting to the creative stuff. How do you pull it off? We profiled four artfully crafted documentaries at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival and asked the filmmakers to share their approaches to their specific challenges.
